Woke has further complicated the old problem, never resolved to my satisfaction at a good grammar school nor subsequently: there are contexts where "his/her" or "he/she" feel necessary, but even more clunky [but more accurate] than "they", the latter I take to being plural, not singular.
I wonder what is taught today?
My children, now all old enough to be retired, scold me for "Wales's" for example, preferring "Wales'."
Having written that, I totally accept than language and spelling change with time. "Color" was often used in Victorian English, as in Color-serjeant, for many years.
