A bit late to the party but worth a chuckle ...

Keflavik and Reykjavik airports will be closed in favor of the new airport in Geld*ingadalar - new project suggests

A substitute for two major airports in the south-western part of Iceland will be discussed in Al■ingi before the end of the year. The project suggests closing airport in Reykjavik, which annoys some locals and real estate companies, as well as the main International airport Keflavik. Instead, a brand new airport will be opened between Keflavik and Reykjavik.

"The new airport will be perfectly situated near the mountain Fagradalsfjall in the valley Geld*ingadalar. It is just 30 km from Reykjavik and 20 km from Keflavik, which makes it easily accessible by all habitats, especially from Grindavik", the introduction part of the project says.

It is noticed, that the area of the new airport is currently under development. These days a volcanic eruption is happening exactly on the territory of the future airport. It is suggested to wait until lava would fill the whole valley, forming a relatively flat surface. Then, according to the project, the only thing that will need to be done is to polish it a bit. Frozen lava is a very strong surface, so there is no need to put asphalt or concrete on top of it. Therefore, a huge cost cut will be achieved.

The cone, from which lava is erupting these days, should be considered as a part of the airport design and can be turned into a mascot of the airport.

There is no final decision about the name of the airport. Mentioned options are "Eldflugv÷llur" and "Fagradalsflugv÷llur", but will be decided after an internet poll.
