The old urban myth that "air crashes come in 3s" probably developed that way, through sloppy reporting. One major crash happens, moves air safety up the news agenda and hacks will find another couple of unrelated air crash stories globally that, were it not for the first really bad one, would go largely unreported.

Same with attacks on children, the reporting of which has resulted in kids not being allowed to walk to and from school, nor meet up with the friends to play without some sort of "diplomatic agreement" between parents and transport being provided to and from. in reality, children are no less safe than they were 50 years ago, but the media never let the facts get in the way of a good story.
