If an inlet cover was left on the engine would have cooked itself on start up.
Perhaps not at start up, but with half the inlet blocked, the engine would have been
very unhappy at anywhere near takeoff power set. The 'half inlet' would choke well short of takeoff power airflow, probably resulting in a surge.
