I don't see the point in the wider population pretending to themselves that they are wearing a mask and thereby doing anything useful.
Half don't appear capable of getting a mask to cover both nose and mouth, let alone understand the purpose of the "underwire" material to form it around the nose - most I have seen wear this bit under the chin. Presumably for more uplift? The others that are making their own masks out of scarfs and the like are broadly picking he wrong thing to use most of the women seem to be picking the most holey, gauzy light material possible. Great for fashion, 'ck all use for catching anything coming out of their orifices. About the only ones making a proper fist of DIY masking-up appear largely to be bikers who are familiar with the need to have a proper fit to stop your helmet from fogging up and already have a decently fitted snood / balaclava / detachable mask. I have no idea what the exemplars of how not to do it do for maintenance and cleaning of their facial covering, but some I have seen worn, I would have thrown away weeks ago as highly unsanitary, which kind of hints at supply issues.
I'm much more minded that the best advice to wear the proper type pof mask, properly fitted and with the other relvant PPE is needed when you are tending to someone who is already or suspected of suffering from Covid-19 to protect you, OR you wear a properly fitted mask AND strictly self isolate at all times when you are suffering from or recovering from Covid-19. Otherwise stay at home with your immediate family & keep the hell away from anybody else.
Sorry to be brutal about this folks, but trhe human race is currently the equivalent of the WW2 Sherman Tank Crews and the Covid virus is the equivalent of the Tiger and King Tiger tanks. The Shermans are pretty bog-standard in arm out protection, but there's a hell of a lot of them if you can starve the opposition of targets and keep out of range a lucky shot from the bog-standard will take out the opposition ultra efficient killing machine. It just takes time and ways to limit the casualties until you get to that lucky shot. Self Isolation so you can't pass it on, Social distance / Shielding so that there's fewer juicy targets available and wait until Covid burns itself out.
Survival is reduced to simple mathematics. If you repeat occurences with a likelihood , this is like raising a number to a power where the power is the number of repeats. Do "X" twice, it's the square, do "X" three times - cubed. any number raised to a power. Here "X" is the average number of reinfections that happen for each initial infection - the "R" value that's mentioned on the news.
If a number is greater than 1.000000000......0, if you keep repeating it several million times in a population, the resulting total will reach infinity - we all WILL die.
If the value is less than 1.0000000...0, it will eventually reach a value of effectively zero. Eventually no new cases, no-one else dies.
If it is exactly 1, the disease will cintinue in the population and only some will die.
If you want to wear a mask, I'd suggest that you try to get something very like a "real" Star Wars Stormtrooper helmet. As for myself, I'll be staying at home. The freezers are still well stocked, the garden is beginning to produce nicely both edibles and decoratives and broadband has so far allowed me to remain part of the team keeping the lights on for you all 24/7.
