It sounds like, in the example, that you haven't been "released" from the approach procedure.
Technically, the missed approach is part of your approach clearance as well, so you'd have to follow the entire procedure unless otherwise cleared. That means fly the missed approach to the end, and then continue as cleared.
Though I do not think that was what the controller meant.
