That is not exactly right.
Norwegian ,Evelop,Plus Ultra, Aerolíneas Argentinas,Avianca,LATAM ... users have plenty of options to travel to South America.
Some of this airlines are seasonal charter outifts , which by themselves doesn't represent anything* and they will be gone in the next financial crisis ,but* when you add them together takes away a piece of the cake in the crowded MAD market.
Others like Avianca or Aerolíneas Argentinas are either government backed (institutionally or financially).
Norwegian albeit fighting for survival has implemented an agressive expansion program at MAD and BCN.
On the other hand its hard to say how an airline with such a different culture will fit in the spanish branch of IAG.
Lets wait and see.
