CWL had quite a mix of routes, mainly domestic (EDI/GLA/BHD/DUB/ORK/JER) and Italy (VCE/VRN/MXP/FCO) with CDG and FAO thrown in to the mix.
FAO was up to 4 or 5 weekly at it's peak, even with FR on the route, and there was talk that FCO, VCE and VRN were doing well, but all ideal for the E-jet, not so on the Q400 even though it has been done elsewhere.
Under project Blackbird, it's likely the Welsh Government decided what routes it wanted to increase the route profile and connectivity from CWL. Remove the E-jets and you're left with the domestic routes. EDI/BHD/DUB/CDG have always done well from CWL and have gradually increased since BE returned to the airport under Blackbird. I wouldn't be surprised though if another deal has been done by the Airport to keep the routes, as the frequencies have been increased. Loganair has come in on CWL-GLA as BE dropped it.
