Just for clarity, the ferry was the only competition available and they guaranteed only that the passengers would get across that day. That put us in the same position as flying, we would need to rent a car once across. Getting our car on with us was a big bonus, the freight ferry would not normally be available for cars left behind but it demonstrates that people can get support from the ferry company if they feel that it's a better deal.
