The quote was from GLA, less than half the distance comparing with London and so yes that would be 'perceived' as a disproportionate fare. I am not sure of the ins and outs of how much this route is subsidised for locals and perhaps there needs to be some reclamation to make it work. These are not late, last seat high fares, this was 4 months out (albeit Aug) with a wide open seat map.
What ever came of FR operating SYY? That would have put the cat amongst the pigeons.
I remember FR looking at SYY back in the pre bank crash days. They wanted an upgrade to the ILS system which at that time was going to cost £20m or thereabouts.
