Thanks for the helpful suggestions and anecdotes all, now sorted.

As it's not my property, I hired a plumber who sorted it all out for 150. Took him around 40 min but he found that the sloping pipe into the septic tank had clogged with the impacted poo of many years where only sporadic use had been made of the plumbing, so no water flushing through, and the septic tank was full anyway. Consequence of that was the vertical soil pipe was clogged and backing into the downstairs toilet. He jetted through the crud and the overflow of grey water and toilet paper pulp in the gully.

The plumber who was going to turn up on Saturday cancelled due to fixing a gas leak, so finally sorted today, much to the relief of Mrs RS and good to close the old year with a free flushing bog!
