Apparently not National Service. In 1993 Greenhill Books published "High Flyers" in which a range of well-known people wrote about their RAF service. Dudley Sutton joined in 1951, trained as an engine mechanic and served at Thorney Island with 2 ANS. He says that he was diagnosed with Manic Depression and was "allowed to by myself out" having accrued "RAF experience of four years service in the ranks, four years' amateur drama, four years of reading and dreaming.and reciting Shakespeare in the company of Wellington bombers at maximum revs".
