According to our pilot logbook (magazine with latest news about the company inc upgrades etc)... people are going from DOJ to successful completion of their Command Upgrade Training in anything from 4-6years. They may or may not have had previous Command experience - it's all done on Seniority. This is for both Boeing and Airbus. Obviously things can change... right place at the right time and all that.

Note the Command upgrade process can be fairly lengthy... it includes Assessment flights, PSA (pilot suitability assessment) and interview. Then if you pass you do CBT, Sim, Line Training etc. The 'process' may start from as little as 3years after your DOJ... so people may say they are getting their 'chance' after 3years or so but in reality being assigned a course and completing the training can be several months later. On my Fleet the 330... some people are doing the PSA etc now, after 3-3.5years of DOJ with no previous Command experience (but they obviously have the hours and company requirements already).
