The other aspect where the plane falls down in the comparison is that to obtain a realistic journey time you have to add in the expected time between when you wanted to travel and when you could travel. This can be estimated as half the average time between departures during the parts of the day someone might reasonably expect to travel, giving 30m for the train... or about 3h for the plane.

On that basis (and assuming that the airport was equally as convenient a departure point for most people) there would need to be at least 4 flights a day (maybe really 5) before the competition was on. If I was them I would actually do this, especially given the size of the intended plane and that they own the airports and handling at both ends. If they want to make it work, and clearly they do and are willing to throw money at it to make it happen, then there's no point setting about a half-baked effort at doing so.
