So sad to see this news - he was one of the most confidence-building and memorable instructors that I have ever flown with - firm, but fair in his assessments and I always enjoyed his sense of humour (not always obvious to all). A Gentleman, as you say, with a great deal of aviation wisdom to impart - I hope that he is 'above' rolling his Hawker Hunter in the sunshine.
Spent many an hour rubbing shoulders with Laurie in the confines of a C150/C152 at Three Counties Aero at BBS. What a true Gent maximising every minute in the air.
RIP Laurie - you'll unfortunately be in good company.
Sometimes used (out of the blue) to come up with tales of his times as an instructor on ETPS at Farnborough, like the time his student managed to mismanage the engine controls on the Viscount and they ended up just after takeoff on only one engine for a short while!!
