Well to just about complete the worlds engine fleet of bypass ratios...........we have.....
P & W jt9d-3a and -7 at 5.0:1
GE CF6-50 at 4.2:1
RR RB211-22b at 5.0:1
RR RB211-524c2 at 5.0:1
RR RB211-524d4 at 4.311:1 (a bit less than it's sisters due to a bigger diameter L.P turbine).

GE 36 - 30ish:1 reputedly

OK, so it was never produced commercially.

OK, you got me here

Why does a bigger dia L.P turbine lower the by-pass ratio?

I can understand the need for a bigger dia LP turbine to support a bigger by-pass ratio (need more horsepower and torque to drive a bigger fan) and I can understand a bigger core with the same size fan lowering the bypass ratio.

Please explain what's really going on with the comment above

You've got it in your last statement, the larger diameter of the lp turbine on the d4 reduced the (effective) area of the cold stream duct.
Thats as I remember it anyway. I do remember it being a bit of squeeze to get in the duct compared to the 22b and 524b.
Anyway, whatever, still a damn fine engine!
Come to think of it I used to have the exact reason for the difference written in my old notes. One of those totally useless bits of info that one collects However having stored them for years as loft insulation they got binned in a big clearout.
Maybe I could have sold'em

Well, GE90 has the following answers:

gas path: GE90 at 8.4:1
twistedenginestarter: GE90-90B 9.0:1
Zeke: GE 90-85B (e.g. B777) by pass ratio 8.4
Which one is it?

Which of the three biggest engines, GE90, PW4000 and RR800 has the lowest fuel comsumption and how much do they weigh?

What commercial airplane engine has the higest thrust?

edited for spelling errors, some probably still there :o

The GE-90 variants, the split between operators and the number of aircraft is

GE90-85B
BRITISH AIRWAYS 15
CHINA SOUTHERN AIRLINES 4

GE90-90B
AEROFLOT 2
BRITISH AIRWAYS 9
LAUDA AIR 3
SAUDI ARABIAN AIRLINES 23
VARIG BRASIL 2

GE90-92B
AIR FRANCE 11
CHINA SOUTHERN AIRLINES 5
CONTINENTAL AIRLINES 18
KUWAIT AIRWAYS 2
MID EAST JET 1

GE90-94B
AIR FRANCE 14
ALITALIA 5
JAPAN AIRLINES 3
SAUDI OGER 1

GE90-115B
JAPAN AIRLINES 2
