Maybe those of you clever chappies providing links to the tourism site should actually read the factual information it provides.

The official name of the country is the Kingdom of the Netherlands. King Willem-Alexander is the king of the nation. Holland actually only means the two provinces of Noord-Holland and Zuid-Holland. However, the name Holland is often used when all of the Netherlands is meant.
A brief history of the Netherlands and Holland
Between 1588 and 1795, the area currently representing the Netherlands was the Republic of Seven United Netherlands. The republic was conquered by French troops in 1795 and became the Batavian Republic. Napoleon appointed his brother Louis as king in 1806, turning the country into a kingdom. The Netherlands remained a kingdom after Napoleon’s defeat. At that time, the area called “Holland” made the biggest contribution to the entire nation’s economy and wealth. As such it became the commonly used name to indicate the entire country.

I live in The Netherlands and most certainly not in Holland!

Well yes, but I think the point being made is that if you lived in Amsterdam, which is where the flight diverted to, you would be in Holland (Noord-Holland, to be precise).

I think we should cut the OP a bit of slack here.

I'd imagine that the Scottish and the Welsh would care!

I just love BBC (Britain Broadcasting Cr@p), when England may be in a football competition they are referred to as "us" but if it's Scotland or Wales then it is "Scotland" or "Wales" and never "us".

At the time of the post it was not yet known where the flight was diverting, only that it was heading for The Netherlands. Yes, having lived in the country for 45 years, I know all about the misuse of the name Holland by the vast majority of the world! My post however was not aimed at the OP but at those who (wrongly) believe that "Holland" is The Netherlands. It's not.
