Any additional news on this BA flight?

What kind of "minor technical fault" would require the aircraft to turn around midway through its 12 hour flight back to London?

Rumour has it that is was somewhat more complex situation than described in some social media.

The crew supposedly had major and lengthy problem/delay in obtaining Russian airspace entry clearance so there went the required fuel for destinatin - combining that with a minor tech defect which might be challenging to resolve at an off line station, even admin wise, on route, and also possibly issues with crew hours might have been the reason for the return.

Aviation Herald finally noticed this incident - such as it has for info, roughly corresponds to wiggy's statement.

Some kind of bureaucratic flight-plan filing/amending issue that resulted in enough in-flight delay entering Russian airspace to run into either fuel or crew-time limits.

Incident: British Airways B773 at London on Jul 7th 2016, 12 hours flight covers 0nm

Since they were able to U-turn, but not continue, one wonders if there was a problem with forecast winds as well.
