BA Gatwick 737 fleet

Flying to Turin yesterday I was surprised to be on a 737. I thought they left the fleet in March. This was a very tired 22 year old version. Apparently there are still only 4 left. On take off, two of the others could be seen in the maintenance hangar. Are the last 4 just for when an Airbus goes tech? How many more months until they are all retired? Will someone buy a 22 year old BA 737 or will they be broken up?

They are being scrapped in the US once withdrawn.

I saw two of the old girls flying when I was there last week. They have been a loyal workhorse for BA.

I'm going to be on shiny new A319's at the end of the month, both flights were flown by the 737's until very recently.

I flew in and out of JER on one last September - very tight! On take-off I actually saw the opposite threshold markings from inside the plane - something I have never seem before! 319 seems to take the airport in its stride a lot more!

They're still in service as the second-hand leased A320s that BA have been acquiring are delayed. All 10 should have been delivered now, yet only 5 have been so far. Of course, the schedule was drawn up many months ago with the assumption that all of them would be in service now. The 737s are covering the lines of work as well as the odd A320 or A319 from Heathrow.

Why are the A320s delayed I hear you ask? I don't know. However, they are 10-12 years old and most have had at least 3+ operators. I can't help thinking BA have been too cheap here and something has cropped up during pre-delivery checks from the leasing company.
