If you visit JetBlast apparently it's a TriStar. NASA already demonstrated AMK with a 720, still it's whoever's money and hopefully not mine...

I just hope they involve some real experts and people from at least one reputible regulatory body instead of these dug up "aviation experts" you see appearing on Sky News whenever a plane goes down who dont really know anything but are quick to sight the fact that it was a twin engined plane and was bound to crash at some stage because it didnt have four pods under the wing!!!!

Otherwise it will turn out to be an utterly wasted and pointless "for the ratings" TV experiment!

The blogg says the pilots will parachute after setting auto pilot to crash.

IIRC the previous effort had remote control of the aircraft from start to finish, isn't it a bit risky to try and jump from a large jet? Has anyone ever parachuted safely from an airliner before?

But didn't they recreated the jump for the film "The Pursuit of DB Cooper"?

Channel 4 to crash pasenger jet

Channel 4 to crash passenger jet for new TV show | TV Blog - Yahoo! TV UK

"A passenger jet will be crashed at high speed in the desert as part of a new Channel 4 programme next year.

The plane will be destroyed in a bid to gain an unprecedented insight into safety issues for the new documentary Plane Crash.

The two pilots will parachute from the airliner, which will be loaded with cameras and sensors, after setting it on autopilot to crash.

Julian Bellamy, head of Channel 4, said: "It is an extraordinary idea and only Channel 4 would be brave enough to do it. Not even aircraft manufacturers have crashed something this big."

The show's producer Geoff Deehan added: "As well as making spectacular television, we hope Plane Crash will be one of the most useful experiments in the history of aviation.

"It will give us unprecedented answers to the big question: how can we make air crashes more survivable?"

The idea for the programme came after the crash of a British Airways Boeing 777 at Heathrow airport last year.

Channel 4 have not revealed exactly where the crash will be taking place or how much it is costing."

So...any idea who the brave pilots will be?

How do they actually get out of the aircraft in flight - yes, I see a reference to parachutes, but they still have to get out of the aircraft in the air, carrying parachutes. Not easy ...

What real value

1) if I recall correctly, for early flights of a totally new aircraft, manufacturers install an escape chute from e.g. the maindeck through the forward cargo door
2) likely the most representative crashes are those that have actually happened occasionally. Crashing on AP from normal flight into a desert likely does not fulfill this criteria.

I didn't realise there was "crash" option on an autopilot.

Maybe it will help to reduce crashes caused by pilot error now we have autopilots capable of doing it for us.

You are not alone. Let's face it, it has been dreamed up by a mindless channel for an entertainment 'stunt' for the unwashed masses of oafs who can guffaw to their hearts content about it in the pub after checking their lottery tickets on a Saturday night. That is the extent of the 'science' involved- any talk of 'scientific analysis' is simply whitewashing something that will have the entertainment value of Big Brother and to which we will be doomed to seeing in excerpt form for the rest of our lives....constantly.

But it is a non-starter. Having an unmanned 747 flying around the skies out of radio control contact is mind-boggling. We don't even have yet reliable radio control for models, and as for fitting up a 747 for UAV operation- they have no idea of the cost, which will hopefully stymy this daft project. Should they ever persuade 2 pilots to be daft enough to go up in the thing to bale out, it is overwhelmingly likely they will rightfully die in the attempt, either sucked into an engine or killed by the wing or tailplane. Sorry- this one isn't going to see the light of day!

One of the most useful experiments in the history of television could be the permanent shut down of all Channel 4 broadcasts.

It will give us unprecedented answers to the big question: how can we make the general population less stupid..............

I very much doubt that this has been dreamt up by Channel 4. I know of a guy, US Navy test pilot, who dreamt up this a few years ago, but could not raise the finance and/nor the permissions. I believe he had planned to use a 727, so they could drop out the back door. I am willing to bet, oh, at least £1.50, that this is this guy again (I can't remember his name at the moment), and that he has been trawling round for some financial support.

Note that I do not necessarily agree with it, I think it is a barking idea. I will, of course, watch it.

Oh, and for all those people that slag off Channel 4, and their viewers. Don't bloomin' well watch it then!
