The pay is horrendous. That too for a five year contract. I'll be surprised to see any captains making a switch.
Is this the standard we can expect in India now???

Thanks for the post Cyrilroy. Had a look-see at the ad........

It seems FO does not need any flying experience, i.e., freshers with zero hours but with A320 TR. is this possible?

Which fresher in his right mind would go for an A 320 rating without any jobs on the horizon? (Not counting the well heeled of-course!)

And commanders with 500 hrs as PIC!!

I'd hate to fly AI with a 500 hr Commander and zero hour FO!
What is up with our national carrier?

@grandfather

You must be new to Indian Aviation

Candidates doing type ratings without a job offer has been the norm since 2010

They do it because the competition is a usually a lot less for stand alone type rated recruitment
To put that into perspective the recent IndiGo exam where they called everyone eligible had around 2500+ candidates ( both type rated and non type rated )

But for a small airline like GoAir it does not make sense to call 2500 candidates in order to hire just 10 pilots

The other issue is that it takes about 1.5-2 months to do a DGCA type rating , about a month to get the type rating endorsed , then the pilots have to undergo ground school , sim checks , supernumerary flying etc
So it takes about 4-5 months from the start of the type rating to sitting in the right seat

So when airlines are desperate for pilots they usually conduct an exam where the candidate has to be type rated eg this Air India ad , IndiGo back in July 2014 , Jet Airways Feb 2013 etc

Go Air has only been hiring A320 type rated pilots since 2010

The number of pilots type rated on 737 and unemployed is around 200

On A320 its around 400-500 . More candidates get an A320 type rating because of the huge number of A320's on order

Ad's like this for only type rated pilots encourages more pilots to go and get a type rating without a job offer...

Everyone applying for the exam be advised that Air India wants a typed application , not handwritten ( except the signature ofcourse )

You can use this website PDFescape - Free PDF Editor & Free PDF Form Filler to fill pdf's for free

If you have a mac you can use Preview

If you have an iPad you can use adobe reader or goodreader

Hmmmm.....very true what you say.

But I also recall that in their last ad for JFOs Indigo said that type rated pilots would have to redo their type rating from a CAE approved center.

25 big one for type rating plus another 25 for redoing it? What a bloody industry!

Decision criteria

Hi, This is specifically for Cyril Roy, but would be glad for inputs from anyone else.

Cyril, as you said, I'm new to the scene in India hence please forgive 'stupid' questions or unintended gaffes.......but you have been a very stable presence on this forum, giving a lot of calm advice, not to mention a lot of information on upcoming recruitment. A guardian angel of the young newbies, if you don't mind my saying so!

I've been trawling the threads on the Wannabees page, specifically the South Asia & Far East. What comes across to me is the sheer frustration and desperation of fresh CPL holders. On the Jet page, forum members are practically beating each other up while trying to interpret the opaque hiring policies of the company, on the Indigo page, impatience is bursting forth with candidates wanting to know if there is any news post the exam.......The dawning of the reality on the job front plays out on these pages and the cruelty of it is heart wrenching.

You had said earlier that getting a TR gives an edge to freshers over the non rated ones. No doubt this is true, but what I want to know is this: on what basis does a CPL guy decide whether to choose A320, B737, ATR or whatever else? TR is hellishly expensive and I can't imagine someone doing a 320 TR, then seeing that there is no hiring, goes on to 737. It's not like doing an MA or MBA and biding time till a job comes along.

Would be glad for any inputs. Thanks in advance.

Haha

While I am far from being a guardian angel the number of scams I have seen actually outnumber the number of genuine vacancies...

On top of that Indian Aviation is littered with pitfalls everything from the pilot licensing to the DGCA exams

Candidates do a type rating for many reasons a few are mentioned below

1. A belief that they have something over the other candidates that make them stand out

2. Large number of A320 on order so definitely vacancies will come out

3. Somebody told them that a particular airline will come out with type rated vacancies

4. They know someone who can help get them in if they do a type rating

5. They know someone who was type rated and got the job and hence they follow the same path hoping for the same success

This is usually aggravated when a CPL holder sitting at home for years and another freshly minted CPL holder goes and gets a type rating and then gets the job

6. DGCA CPL expires in 5 years . Doing a type rating within 6 months automatically counts towards the renewal requirements . So those waiting for so long believe that for 5 years nobody hired me with just a CPL perhaps doing a type rating now will improve my chances

7. Most airlines in India would rather hire someone with 200 hours and a type rating than hire someone who has 1500 hours of piston or turboprop experience

Reasons I have seen for doing an ATR type rating is to again be different from the rest of the crowd that did a type rating.

ATR type ratings are usually much cheaper than A320 or 737

Most candidates are able to afford atleast 1 type rating without having to take a loan . Although some take a loan and get it done because they some source of income to pay off the EMI
If they get a job on another aircraft other than the one they are type rated on they will then usually have to take a loan for that

Very well analysed. Thanks Cyril.

I guess many newbies (and their parents!) are beginning to wonder why the hell they had this 'dream' to begin with and what starry eyed notions drove them to pursue it!

But I must commend the fortitude of this tribe to hang in there for years and years hoping for a break.

All the best to all of them and good luck!

Rumour has it that the walk-in interview for Commanders at Air India, Hyderabad was a no show. Understand nobody turned up!

Wonder what happened with the FO applications.
