Indonesia AirAsia X Gets Approval to Operate, Feeding Traffic Locally
Indonesia AirAsia X, a local unit of Malaysia’s AirAsia X, has received the seal of approval from Indonesia’s Transportation Ministry, moving it one step closer to its entry into the Indonesian market.
“With this air operator certificate, Indonesia AirAsia Extra will now commence application for operating permits and slots to its intended international routes,” AirAsia X stated in a listing on the Bursa Malaysia stock exchange on Friday.
According to the statement, Indonesia AirAsia Extra (IAAX) had received its air operator’s certificate from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation at the Transportation Ministry on Thursday.
Indonesia AirAsia Extra (IAAX) is a joint venture between AirAsia X — the long-haul arm of the AirAsia Group, Asia’s biggest budget airline — and a local partner, Kirana Anugerah Perkasa.
The joint venture was established earlier in January this year, as AirAsia X holds 49 percent of IAAX and Kirana holds the remaining 51 percent. Bali-based IAAX will be the first long-haul low-cost carrier in Southeast Asia’s largest economy.
The company currently owns one Airbus 330-300 and is planning to lease more aircraft moving forward, it claimed in the statement, without specifying how many aircraft it aims to have in its fleet.
IAAX is expected to provide feeder traffic from North Asia and Australia to AirAsia X’s current domestic operations, according to a report by Reuters. AirAsia X had previously launched a local unit in Thailand with Thai AirAsia X (TAAX), which launched its first official service from Bangkok, Thailand to Seoul, South Korea in June this year . The presence of both IAAX and TAAX is forecast to strengthen Air Asia’s network in the Southeast Asia region, according to an aviation market research firm, Centre of Aviation (CAPA).
Indonesia has attracted many budget airlines, such as the AirAsia Group, seeking to take advantage of its massive population size and growing middle class population.
Still, the country’s aviation market has been struggling to take off this year due to overcapacity issues, volatile foreign exchange rates and higher jet fuel price.
