Gulf carriers like Emirates and ------ Airways dangle fat pay packets to bring Indian

MUMBAI: Gulf carriers are swooping down on the Indian aviation market with enviable pays and perks as they look to hire the country's flying talent to man their expansion plans.

Abu Dhabi-based ------ Airways last week conducted road shows to a massive turnout of pilots and gave them a sneak peak into what lay in store for them if they were to join its crew. Sources said perks promised include a welcome bonus worth several months of salary.

For instance, budget carriers IndiGo and GoAir together have an order for 255 planes, deliveries of which start in 2016. Each narrow-bodied plane requires eight sets of first officers and captains. GoAir which plans to lease planes in the interim hired 35 pilots last year, is equally divided into commanders and co-pilots

India has about 4,000 unemployed commercial pilot licence holders, thanks to an eternally growing allure among youngsters towards the glamour of the aviation industry.

In the three years till 2013, about 2,048 pilots were trained in government and private pilot training academies, industry records showed. The huge pool and limited opportunities in the country which has a total of just above 350 commercial planes make for massive hiring potential for Gulf carriers which wouldn't prefer not to hire expats

But the country faces a shortage of flight commanders which forces local aviation companies to hire costlier foreign pilots, hiking salary costs and impacting margins. Indian carriers employed about 262 foreign pilots as of 2013. Further hiring of commanders from the market by foreign carriers would widen the demand-supply gap, say experts

Gulf carriers are some of the fastest growing in the world. ------, for instance, has a fleet of 94 planes and has about 225 more on order while Emirates has 377 aircraft on order, including 95 of the Airbus A380s, the biggest passenger plane in the world. Sources said ------ which last year completed a stakepurchase deal with Jet Airways is looking to hire more than 120 pilots. The airline itself didn't respond to queries

The pilots have to undergo three extensive tests and an interview in May. If they make it through, the benefits are considerable. ------ is offering first officers of aircraft ranging from Airbus 320s to Boeing 777s a tax-free salary of $7,075 (Rs 4,21,953) per month

On top of that there is an allowance of AED 40 (Rs 650) per flying hour and additional per hour meal allowances of AED 12 (Rs 195) to AED 23 (Rs 374) for international flying depending on which region they fly to. An A320 pilot would fly about 60-70 hours a month

That's not all. They also get AED160,000 (Rs 25,96,800) as housing allowance, that is unless they stay in company-owned houses. The allowance would get them a 3-room apartment in the posh areas Abu Dhabi or a 3-bedroom villa with a swimming pool if they decided to go into less upscale areas in the city. Aside of that, the pilots get AED 36,000 (Rs 5,84,280) for individual primary education of up to 4 children and AED 50,400 (Rs 817,992) for their higher school education

"The airline executives told us that the rate at which they are growing, we will be shifted to operating a wide-bodied plane within a year and in less than a couple of years be promoted to commander. I have been flying the A320 at Air India for ten years now," said a senior Air India Airbus commander who attended the roadshow

Commanders would get a monthly salary of $9,578 (Rs 5 71, 231) and a housing allowance of AED 170,000 (Rs 27,59,100), other components being the same as that of a captain. National carrier Air India gives about Rs 3.2 lakh to its commanders while IndiGo gives a net salary ofRs 4.9 lakh, said sources in the know. GoAir, with its recent salary increment pays Rs 30,000-Rs 40,000 higher than IndiGo, they said

Gosh... why would a pilot from Air India want to fly for an airline that actually pays a respectable salary, and on time!!!!
