Renewal of an Indian CPL.

Hey guys, so my CPL is lapsing in under a year, I wanted to know what the procedure is for renewal of the license, I've tried the DGCA web site but they talk about renewals only after your license has lapsed and I've not been employed so if anybody has any information regarding this it would be greatly appreciated, also my license has the BE-76 endorsed on it and that airplane is no longer recognized by the DGCA so if any one knows what has to be done regarding that it would be of great help. Thanks in advance.

Just leaf through the last couple of pages in it. It has guidelines for renewal right on it.

BE-76 rating or any flying requirement could be advised by the more experienced ppl here.

You could also consider a TR.
That would renew your license right away.

Do you mean renewal of IR? Coz even my license is expiring next year and I am planning on doing Type.

I am saying that any Type rating would result in an automatic renewal of the CPL.

You spend 15 hours flying a BE 76- costs about 4 lacs,

better spend a bit more and get a TR right? atleast increases your chances at landing a job.

Have you even tried reading the last page of your CPL yet?

Why buy a TR when it's useless with no time on the type?

I've lost count of the number of people I know who've paid for their type ratings and have nothing to show for it.

But doing your type rating doesnt equal to renewal of CPL, right?
I dont think the hours you do in your type rating can be counted towards renewal requirement for CPL, whereas the ones done for Multi are...

TR counts towards CPL renewal.

My B737 rated friends atleast had 3 interviews in the last 7 months..
how many did we have?

Are you seriously suggesting someone spend 15 lacs on a type to get a CPL RENEWED?
As far as i understand, This thread was started to know what the procedure/requirement for CPL renewal is. So lets stay on topic. Why not just do the required number of hours to renew it ? whats the harm in doing that?

And Who queried as to how many interviews your "friends" had in the last 7 months??! Maybe the person doesnt want to spend money on type right now. I sure dont want to, just to get my CPL renewed.

my license has the BE-76 endorsed on it and that airplane is no longer recognized by the DGCA so if any one knows what has to be done regarding that it would be of great help.
As far as I know, once DGCA stopped recognizing Duchess, people who came back with Duchess rating couldnt get it endorsed it on their license.
So , I would go out on a limb here and say that
You wont be able to renew that rating on your license as long as its not recognized. You'll either have to get another multi endorsement if you want, or get a renewed CPL without ME.
It sucks, i know.
But please confirm what i have said with the DGCA.

It has precise instructions along with the relevant clauses about renewing your licenses.

He is asking for a renewal, not a new endorsement. So, the DGCA will allow it.

Couldnt you have opened your license and seen the rules for yourselves instead of the silly rebuke? Or is your time too precious huh?

FYI- back when there was that severe pilot shortage in 2007, back when airlines used to advertise for 20 positions and 10 used to turn up and all got selected...
They only ever asked one question for the interviews.. "How do you renew your license?"

And now if you cant answer that...

Well evidently you did, as far as my knowledge of the english language goes, mentioning the letter 's' at the end of idiot makes it plural, hence referring to more than one person, and also you mentioned arsenal, which really makes my previous point redundant.

Anyways, I'm not here to get into arguments, i created this thread for a reason, and I appreciate your help, I never thought of looking at the back of the CPL. That was helpful.

I am not interested in doing a type rating it's not worth it, but that was an interesting fact to know.

These questions are being asked, not out of sheer laziness, but in the hope that some one in my same situation may have already renewed their license. I have gone through hell and back with the DGCA the first time around, I've called them innumerable times, but to no avail. So I will continue asking questions on the forum, and if you would like to answer in a derogatory manner, then don't.

Now I know what I have to do to renew my CPL. It says 10 hours and a day, night check, is that supposed to be done per aircraft or will 10 hours on a multi and a day, night check on the multi and single get my license current for both?

In my case the BE-76 is de recognized so do I just fly 10 hours on a new multi as that in the minimum amount of hours to get a multi endorsed on the license?

I suppose the 10 hours can be done on any plane......the GFT day , night and IR are plane specific......

Are you sure about 10 hours? Coz i read 10 hours in the Bare Acts, but then someone mentioned 20 hours somewhere else. Its a case of which one is the latest rule, i guess.

Regarding the multi, before deciding to fly on any other multi, do get in touch with some flying clubs here, in india to get a idea of the rule (off the top of my head, Bhopal/Indore had a multi, Bombay Flying Club had it but hasnt started ops , last i heard and also one more flying club in south india)

To Summarize and make it easier to understand

hey guys... for renewal of the CPL, this is what I think are the requirements.

The DGCA website states

having satisfactorily completed not less than ten hours of flight time as Pilot-in-Command (Fifty percent of flight time as Co-Pilot may be counted towards the requirement of flight time as Pilot-in-Command) within a period of six months immediately preceding the date of application for renewal; or in lieu thereof, having satisfactorily completed the general flying test by day and night as laid down in clause (h) of paragraph 1 within the same period;
So it says, 10 hours of flight time in the last 6 months... OR IN LIEU THEREOF a GFT by DAY and NIGHT.

Taking example of a Guy with C152 & PA34

Now According to me, just for the Renewal of the CPL one would need 10 hours on any aircraft.

Now to renew your Multi Engine Rating, You would need a GFT by DAY & NIGHT on the Multi.

To renew your IR, a IR CHECK each on the Aircrafts you would like the IR on.(i.e. Single & Multi)

Therefore to Summarize (Taking example of a Guy with C152 & PA34 & IR on Both)

For renewal of CPL


01 Hour FAM (DUAL)
07 Hours Solo - C152 (PIC)
= 08 Hours

For Renewal of Multi Engine Rating

01 Hour FAM (DUAL)
01 hour GFT DAY, NIGHT & IR Each on PA34 (PIC u/S)
= 04 Hours

7 (152) + 3 (PA34) = 10 Hours PIC

Therefore 12 hours of flight time required.

The GFT's would have to be done in INDIA as per the new rules of conversion.
This escalates the Costs too much.

Rates for the Multi right now are varying around Rs. 42000/hr + tax @ Chimes.

Also remember, a Valid FRTOL & Medical is required before start of any of the above flights.

Total cost should be around 2 Lacs ± 10%.

CPL/IR Renewal

I did my type in early 2012 and my IR is about too expire soon. Also my CPL is about to expire in mid 2013.

Following are the requirements according to Schedule II Section J for Renewal:-

1. Requirements for issue of Licence— An applicant for a Commercial Pilot’s Licence shall satisfy the following requirements:—

(h) Skill— He shall have demonstrated his competency to perform the procedures and manoeuvres prescribed in the syllabus to the satisfaction of an examiner, on the type of aeroplane to which the application for licence relates, within a period of six months immediately preceding the date of application. The Director General may, however, allow Skill Test or part thereof to be carried out on aircraft/ approved Zero Flight Time Training simulator level ‘D’ for the type of aircraft. The competency shall be demonstrated as in —

(i) general flying test by day;

(ii) general flying test by night;

(iii) a cross-country flight test by day consisting of a flight of not less than two hundred fifty nautical miles in the course of which at least one full stop landing at an aerodrome other than the aerodrome of departure shall be made; and

(iv) a cross-country flying test by night consisting of a flight of not less than one hundred twenty nautical miles returning to the place of departure without landing elsewhere.

3. Renewal— The licence may be renewed on receipt of satisfactory evidence of the applicant —

(a) having undergone a medical examination in accordance with para 1(c) above;

(b) having satisfactorily completed not less than ten hours of flight time as Pilot-in-Command (Fifty percent of flight time as Co-Pilot may be counted towards the requirement of flight time as Pilot-in-Command) within a period of six months immediately preceding the date of application for renewal; or in lieu thereof, having satisfactorily completed the general flying test by day and night as laid down in clause (h) of paragraph 1 within the same period;

(c) having a current Flight Radio Telephone Operator’s Licence for operation of radio telephone apparatus on board an aircraft, issued by the Director-General.


I have C-172 and BE-76 endorsements on my license (Multi-Engine Land) and now if I do CPL renewal on C-172 as there is no BE-76 in India anymore, will it become Single-Engine Land?

If yes, then how will I be able to keep my type endorsed as it needs my CPL to be Multi-Engine Land and then will I be able to renew my IR on type?

Or if I renew my IR first on type as my CPL is going to expire later and later if I renew my CPL on C-172, what happens to my type rating?

Also is it advisable/cheaper to do everything (GFT by Day, Night and IR) on type itself as anyhow I will be renewing my IR on type?
