The story about the Taiwan pilots was on the front page of quite a few Chinese news papers- with some lovely pictures of them shaking hands with mainland pilots in the cockpit. In my opinion it was more of a political stunt to hire these crews. Remember officially Taiwan is part of China, according to the PRC of China government anyway, so hiring people from Taiwan; they are just hiring another Chinese person, not sure how it works for people from the mainland working in Taiwan though.
As for the low pay, yes it is but so is the cost of living. So it depends what you want from life.
