When I spoke to HR months back asking number of poolies and respective number on the list (trying to figure out timeline if and when classes would resume) HR did not want to release that info.

DESO interviews were stopped sometime in Nov 2008 and being an Aug interviewee, I'd assume classes were run until summer '09. So, 2 interview classes/month, a dozen successful candidates each gives you 100-150 poolies maybe?

Obviously rough numbers based on assumption, guestimates and bad math. You do the math. No really, please, do the math for me. My arithmetics test on the computer sucked!

A course in the past usually consisted of any combination of DESO, DEFO and conversions. Usually between 2-8 pilots per course for CBT, ground school and then pairs for sim training.

Guys just talked to friend of mine in CX...He said last he heard they had 43 DEFO in pool. Guys that interviewd in 2007 would go first than the guys/gal from 2008. He also said they will ask some of the DEFO if they would want to come in as a SO to start sooner. I didn't ask about how many DESO sorry guys. He also said he hadn't been told about any new classes for 2010 but it doesn't mean it will not happen as they are always last to know. So keep your finger cross. He had a good question...he said he wounder how many of those 43 or so guys will be able to take the job as some have already taken other jobs and might be bonded....i.e EK or Qatar.

If your friend is saying that guys that interviewed in 2007 are still waiting he does not know what he is talking about! I had an interview in early 2008 and have been working for CX for well over a year. DESO but there were DEFO's I know who interviewed in 2008 and are at work like me. Only reason someone who interviewed in 2007 and got in is not working for CX is that they turned down class dates.

Guys I am sorry I wasnt very clear in what I was saying. We were talking about guys that are waiting for U.S. bases, as I am sure they didn't have any classes in 2008 or 2009. Now I am sure they had courses for other ports but not U.S. I was offered a Toronto B777 back in 2008 but I ask to wait for U.S.. The post above is correct they did have classes in 08 just not where I wanted, thanks for clearing it up.

DESO pool has around 40-60 people in it awaiting start dates.

2010 Budget operating plan comes out in the next 6 weeks, that will give us a clearer picture as to what the company flight crew requirements will be for next year....hang in there boys/girls it will be worth the wait!!!

flynhigh:

there were lots of US DEFO courses in 2008 on the B744 for SFO, LAX, JFK and ANC. A total of 32 DEFO's from this time period are still employed.

Are you saying guys that interview 2008 were offered class date in 2008. I am at odd as they CNX all interviews from june 2008 and have not interviewd since. So maybe what flynhigh is saying is correct that they still have guys from 2007 waitting for classes. But than again you are inside and have better info. Thanks all.

Cheers

There is fair amount of 2007 DEFO NA newhires who never made it to class in 2008. Some of us were told we will not be in class til 2009 when we got hired. Classes for 2009 were not scheduled. Same newhires are waiting for class dates now. Whoever suggest otherwise have incorrect information. And yes I am a 2007 NA DEFO hire waiting for a class. No class was ever offered to me. I hope we will all find out in few weeks.

Courses are offered depending on the interview score, previous equipment experience and internal reference. Meaning that someone who interviewed in 2008 was offered a course before someone who interviewed in 2007. In practical terms someone with B737/B757/B767 or similar experience will be called before someone with RJ experience.

HHMM That is very interesting.... I was told by HR that courses went in the order from the date that you had your final interview... NOT by a scoring system. If there is space in the Base Region that you have requested i.e. US or Europe and you are next in line then you get the course... If you decline then it falls to the next person, but when the next course is offered for that region then guess what... you get asked again. My second interview was in October 2008 from the number of guys in the pool I was told to expect a course late 2010 if not early 2011 (depending on final numbers).

All that being said, I stand to be corrected.

just a small reminder to the CXpilots-to-be. It has been decided during spring 2009 to raise the retirement age from 55 to 65. A choice was given with a majority of FO's to stay till 55 and a majority of CN's to go onto RA65. You will be hired on CoS08 which will give you max RA65.
In exchange of this new RA, fast track command upgrade on freighter no longer exists.
So to summarize we expect time to command to reach about 15 years in HK, and 20+ on bases. Just food for thought, especially for the one who awaiting start dates and still wonder what to do.
Best of luck with your decision.

I have same information as Puppet Master. The simple reason is that there were no classes to put people in. No score will affect this. NA last DEFO class was in summer 2008. I would guess most of the NA DEFO's hired in Fall/Winter 2007 did not receive a class offer. Things change maybe there is something new now, but I was told that pool is chronological and not competitive.

It all makes sense now. I think GTC58 was getting confused with AJX and AJV who do use a scoring system during there interviews.

GTC. I assume that you use to work for AJX and now for CX. Just curious, which one do you prefer and why?

PM me if you like

Cheers ,

For Puppet Master:
I attended 2nd DEFO interview in October as well, so I think we are pretty close in the queue....have you received official information about end 2010/early 2011? I haven't found reliable infos so far and I am really looking forward to have some. You can contact me separately if you want so we don't bore all other guys in the list!! I don't know if it is possible as I am pretty new in these forum. Many thanks, Good luck to everybody.

You guys don't have to believe me, just wanted to offer some real info from the inside. I have flown with guys who had their interviews in fall 2007 and got a course 2-3 months later and know someone personally who had an interview in October 2007 and started Jan 2008, NA base. The pilots in the group of courses when I started probably all interviewed roughly within a 1 year period and for sure all didn't get called in sequence of their interview date. Some got called as soon as 3 months others much later.
