What makes you think they hadn't seen them? I'm pretty sure they had seen them, they were an experienced and capable crew. They just thought the route was safe and that they were low lying islands.

I'm not flouncing off. I just don't want an inappropriate argument given the tragic subject matter. I gave my opinion. They knew they were flying over islands at 200' as the rad alt warner went off....

How do you know the island was not visible on radar? Much more likely that they could see it. Perhaps thought the route they were flying was some sort of safe low level route.
