Provided, the NYT / AFP scenario is true, one question is switched out here: Why descended the aircraft? Even if the pilot left on the flight deck became unconcious, the AP would fly the aircraft...

Of course way too early for any thoughts about the cause, but it reminds me about the incident in November 2014 with an LH A321, which surprisely descended because of faulty sensors.
