But several other operators provide first or business class seats to the pilots in addition to the standard crew rest. BA and UA for example. And they are not flying sectors as long as QF will.

The first route the 787 will fly MEL-LAX is less than 18 hours ToD (if I recall correctly). That is precisely covered by RM20.3. It spells out the need for 2 class 1 rests and what a class 1 rest is....
