that's the scenario I see as well Kulverstukas...now whether a stripped out nut on the stab (a la Alaska MD-80) caused this, or something exploded causing this to occur is the question

AO283...I tend to agree..structural failure around the circumference of the upper aft fuselage..tore away from the lower fuselage..THS (stab) failure/separation? but the upper rear fuselage doesn't...

from the media photos anyway, the top section of the aft fuselage looks like a rather clean crack, instead of something that was blown off...like the Aloha 737 "cabriolet"

something in the pitch control system of that airplane broke and rendered it uncontrollable...THS jackscrew maybe? Tail strike repair?..
