But surely a lot of them can't have flown more then 25,000 hrs? With the finance management skills US carriers (especially) have, there could be useful life in such machines before 40K hrs?

Given the crash of oil prices and the near certainty that this will reduce jet fuel prices, surely this jet will come into contention again? The economics of flying it will certainly improve....
