Many thanks for the replies. It's a wireless router. Crackling disappears as soon as I switch the computer off so it looks as though I need to get it checked by an expert.

Phone interference

For the last few weeks we have had crackling on our BT phone line. I went through the process of disconnecting everything in turn and eventually discovered that it is my computer causing the problem...
