I'm sure I was. I had a feeling it was air ambulance or rescue. I vaguely remember seeing it on the news.
Any idea when this would have been? Late 70s or early 80s I suspect

I had a very vague recollection of something going into the bay a long time back. Maybe it wasn't an air ambulance.

There was one en route to Hamilton Island in...

There was one en route to Hamilton Island in 2003.
Another near Marlborough in 2000.
Another Fraser Island 1993.

All were night VFR and CFIT.
