The escorts will be pealing off to do local exercises right through the deployment. This just happens to present this type of opportunity. I imagine they will be in and out within a week while the...

There is no point having Type45s, Astutes if they aren’t facilitating hard power. The UK either has a blue water navy, or resigns it’s seat at the security council and reverts to local and...

I haven’t seen any mention of SVRL in this deployment. I was expecting that to be an area where more progress would be made. I wonder if the risks associated with that type of landing have been...

I can't see a situation where the F35 number would get past 24. That's probably the maximum capacity where the junglies can remain on board. In most scenarios you are likely to want that RM capacity...

Hval, the point is it isn't going to just be the F35s. Lusty and Ocean are on their last legs (old age and cheap build). The QE class will be the home for the Commando helicopter force too. 90% of...

So it's not a strategic interest? Or the UK can't afford to protect it's key strategic interests?

We clearly have the money if we prioritise correctly, so what is your point?

The problem is...

There was NEVER going to be more than a like for like replacement for the GR9s. So 3 x 9 + a small OCU / reserve. 50 should just about cover that. The UK can always return for further buys later.

CVF v CVN

We might be paying over odds but wee are still paying £4bn for two rather than £6bn for one. You could probably crew both CVFs with the CVNs compliment. So not such a bad deal after all.

Current situation

Some would say that the current shortage of harriers was always a short term blip until other types could be run out in Stan - coupled with the loss of pilots after the end of SHAR and the upgrade of...

B's

Agree with Jacko. Buying C's would effectively mean handing them all over to the FAA full time. Whilst I am obviously a big fan of having the carriers, I can also see the common sense of having an...

Froggie carrier

One answer to that. If it is so good, why did the froggies pay money up front to look at and use the RNs CVF design?

Whilst a very good ship, the CdG is expensive to build and run (requiring a 24...

Maybe it's what you don't see. Is it just a coincidence that 30 out of the 44 ASW Merlins are being updated - leaving a handy batch of 12 (i can't remember how many have been lost)? Could these cabs...

STOVL

I think it's mostly about the training. With STOVL the whole of JFH, or JFDave can either be flexibly deployed ashore or to the CVF, without any particularly difficult retraining.

If the UK went...

Costs

The RN already covers the cost of running 2 carriers within its budget - so its not extra money being spent. The type 45s have been found to run on half the fuel of the type 42s they replace, so...

Harriers

I agree with all the above. The Harriers are needed now and are showing their worth day in and day out. It's doing what it was born for. The GR4 isn't the best fit for Stan.

But I also agree...
