I was 18, I applied about 1 week after turning 18. It's a pretty fast turn around, from first applying and going out. So I think it's probs best to just wait till you're 18 :)

Don't worry, the instructor explains everything for you. He will tell you where to look for various readings, just go in with a level head and it will seem a walk in the park.
