That's what I've been told by others KenV. Unlike yourself, I'm not (former) aircrew, and so would be interested to hear your take on why you feel the F-35 needs the rail whereas the F-16 and F-22...

It's down to canopy strength, and the F-35 requiring a greater level of bird-strike protection than either the F-16 or F-22. Don't forget, the F-35 has no HUD to protect the pilot's face....
