Because the flight departed from STN maybe STN standby crew were called to operate the ACE flight so operationally makes sense to land back in STN

First off having not flown from the airport before I must say the airport is not well sign posed until you almost get to Southend unless I missed it there...

The only difference is the Airlines at LCY will use other Airlines to accommodate their passengers if they don't just re schedule the flight from the divert Airport
BA, LUX and City Jet normally...

If true and these flights were cancelled then this is very poor customer service by Easyjet, Southend to Stansted by coach is not that far and looking at the cancelled flights they were all holiday...
