You can fly a climbing approach and still have enough power to fly away providing the power margin is good enough (good forward speed or updraughting air). Obviously the speed will have to decrease...

I like the shallow approach too.

Arm out the window, why is a shallow approach 'a horses arse' idea on the lee side of a mountain? What makes the steep approach better in this situation?
