ICAO rules apply. But that starts when lost comm is identified. Then the 7600 squawk followed by the 7 minute timer. After 7 minutes you follow the ICAO procedure which is to fly the flight plan...

Contrails don't descend much, if at all.

I've had to offset slightly to avoid turbulence from contrails. Offset out of the contrail and the ride improved immediately.
