In that role they should be referred to as 'convertible' not combination, combined "combi" but often combi is used for both.

For example Boeing calls a convertible a -200C while a combi is -200M

This is a failure of the MCP speed window. Selecting ALT should result in SPD, the speed window was unable to open or send the info, it cannot use VNAV(FMC info) with ALT as the vertical mode.
