Flight number changed after an accident.

I read once that a flight number involved in an accident is retired after a major accident. For instance KUL-PEK is now MH360 and MS804 has already switched to MS802. I understand this is more a marketing reaction but is it a common part of emergency response or just my idea?

Thanks in advance.
