Westjet in LGA

LGA is a small airport , keep your eyes out when on the move...

Two planes clip wings at LaGuardia Airport | New York Post

Two airliners were slightly damaged after clipping each other shortly after landing at LaGuardia Airport on Thursday morning — but no one was reported injured, officials said.

WestJet Flight 1200, a Boeing 737, and Republic Airline Flight 5899, an Embraer E170, came in contact around 8:30 a.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration and Port Authority.

The Republic plane’s rear stabilizer and the WestJet aircraft’s left wing were damaged in the mishap, which occurred at the intersection of Taxiway B and Taxiway M, officials said.

The Republic aircraft, operating for Delta Connection, was stopped on a taxiway awaiting a gate when the wingtip of the taxiing Boeing 737 clipped it, Republic spokesman Jon Austin told The Post.

“There were no injuries reported and the safety of all our customers and crew is our top priority,” he said.

A Republic passenger posted an image from the airport.

“Our plane just hit by West Jet at LaGuardia. A hit a (sic) run. Their wing clipped our tail. We’re stuck,” Rob Lau tweeted under the handle @RobLau165.

The passengers were removed from both aircraft and placed on other flights after the collision, which did not affect operations at the airport, according to the Port Authority.

WestJet did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The FAA is investigating the incident.

Typically confused reporting:

The Republic aircraft, operating for Delta Connection, was stopped on a taxiway awaiting a gate

The passengers were removed from both aircraft and placed on other flights after the collision

What do you find confusing about those statements? They seem pretty clear to me.

If you're stopped on a taxiway awaiting a gate, then you're an inbound flight, right?

So why would all the arriving passengers be "placed on other flights"? They can't all have been in transit, particularly given we're talking about LGA.

Perhaps the author was of the opinion that a detailed explanation of which passengers continued on other aircraft and which were not as LGA was their final destination, while technically more correct, was not justified by the relatively minor nature of the incident and the lack of relevance to anything important.

The old "holding short of the gate" trick...

Tell me about it. I operated the L-1011 into the Garbage Pit.

Both aircraft were arrivals, Republic reported to the ground controller the they had been hit by Westjet. Westjet acknowledged the report.

Republic wanted to get checked out for damage before they taxied to the gate. The fire trucks came and one of them reported no damage. Republic said they were sure they were hit and Westjet agreed, saw 'minor' damage to their own wingtip.

The fire crew took another look and reported damage to one of the horizontal stabs on Republic's tail. Both planes then taxied to the gate.

The ground controller didn't miss a beat through all of this and kept things flowing around the fender bender.

The tapes are over at LiveATC.net on the 1200Z and 1230Z May 11 reels for La Guardia ground.

That and pushing back from the gate seem to be a common theme in these ground scrapes at busy airports.
