Passenger plane crash lands on Moscow highway near Vnukovo Airport — RT

A passenger jet has crashed after taking a hard landing at Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport, witnesses say. Two people were killed and at least three others were taken to hospital in a critical condition, says Russia’s Interior Ministry.

The plane may have been carrying at least 8 passengers and 4 crew. It was flying in from Pardubice, the Czech Republic. The airport's press service says that all the people onboard were the crew.

Preliminary reports say the jet, which belongs to Russian low-cost airline Red Wings, crashed after taking a second landing attempt. It rolled out from the runway into Kievskoye Highway, fell into pieces and caught fire. The plane broke into three big parts, reports RIA Novosti quoting sources. The incident took place at around 16:35 local time (12:35 GMT).

Firefighters and rescuers work on the ground. The circumstances of the incident are being clarified. Earlier, the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry confirmed that the plane had to make a forced landing.

Part of the crashed Tupolev-204 has blocked the highway; a traffic jam is developing at the scene. Vnukovo-bound flights are getting diverted to Sheremetyevo Airport.

Red Wings is a Russian airline that specializes in charter flights to Russia and Europe. In 2012 the company began to operate regular flights throughout Russia. The company is the largest buyer of Russian-made Tu-204 airplanes.

Red Wings is owned by the Russian tycoon Alexander Lebedev. In November 2012, a company leasing planes to Red Wings filed eight lawsuits demanding some $65 million in debts. However, it was reported that lawsuits were just a formal procedure and the dispute between the two companies would be resolved out of court

The gantry in the picture above crosses the highway at the threshold of runway 02 - would appear that the wreck is aligned southwest so a landing and overrun on 20 seems possible..........

probably flight RWZ9268

Russian forums report all persons on board alive, two people injured badly. No passangers on board, only 11 crew members.

2 persons reported dead. What a luck this was a ferry flight without pax.

Kulverstukas 29th Dec 2012 13:09

Russia 1, The main TV station up here just said on the 6pm news that it crashed on its second attempt to land. News mentioned bad crosswind but Current Metar (17:30LT) is showing 280/10 kts, vis 10k and clouds overcast at 2000ft? Still waiting to hear at what time it crashed!

Looks to have come down short of the runway only by a few hundred metres

They have reported that 2 of the crew have died.

May they rest in peace. :(

thought

the tupolov 204 (considered broadley equivilent to the Boeing 757 or so) was virtually empty.

as many pilots know, such a lightly loaded plane demands extra attention for landing as it doesn't settle in for landing as a normally loaded plane. Indeed I recall the expression: we were so light that someone had to shoot us down to get it to stop floating the runway away.

in other words, too fast, too light, too long. add to this a slick runway (?) and it wold have been a demanding approach even with light winds and a good high ceiling.
