Apparently he was offered a plea bargain for 30 days in a Toronto halfway house, but he elected to go to jail for a year.
"No Your Honour, please, anything but that", he begged, and the judge, not wanting to cause permanent emotional scars, granted his wish.
"I can understand the concern of the accused", said the judge. "I wouldn't wish 30 days in Toronto on my worst enemy."

first faced charges of uttering threats, possession of a controlled substance (he was found with heroin and methamphetamine), and endangering aircraft by false information as well as the mischief counts

Moron is an Understatement!
If I read the Register story correctly, the fool made his threat call From His Own Telephone. That alone should get him an additional year, simply for being so STUPID.
