JUBA: Several people were killed Wednesday when a plane crash-landed shortly after taking off from South Sudan's capital Juba, an AFP reporter said.
The plane crashed onto a small island in the White Nile river, close to Juba airport.
Several small farming communities live on the island, and it was not clear if some of the victims were people who were on the ground when the plane hit.
"Cargo plane heading to Paloch in Upper Nile State crashed just 800 metres from Juba International Airport runway," reported Radio Miraya, a UN-backed station.
The radio said up to 40 people may have been killed, adding that airport officials had told them only three passengers had survived.
An AFP reporter at the scene said he could see people trying to search for survivors and carry "several" bodies out of the wreckage.
The main fuselage of the plane had ploughed into thick woodland, with debris scattered around the riverbank in a wide area.

sleeper & Kulverstukas

That's an incorrect video. The airport shown is not Juba and the type appears to be a B707....

Yes, I very much doubt that an aeroplane that hits the gorund at a very high bank and going down fast, then exploding in a massive fireball, would be that AN-12.

That POS probably should have been retired long ago, but it doesn't negate the fact that our Russian friends are having a string of bad luck in that part of the world.

Good eye. I believe that's 2009 crash of Azza Transport flight 2241 in the Emirates, and yes, it's a 707.

Confirmed survivor:

South Sudan plane crash baby 'conscious' in Juba - BBC News

The cargo plane was not authorised to take passengers, Stephen Warikozi, the head of South Sudan's Civil Aviation Authority told journalists, but there were thought to have been dozens on board. They were all from South Sudan.
It is not clear what caused the crash but Ukraine-based Antonov said the plane had not been airworthy.
Five of the six crew members were Armenian, while the sixth was Russian. They were all killed.

from wiki : "As of August 2011, more than 190 Antonov An-12s and Shaanxi Y-8s have crashed since the first prototype of the An-12 was severely damaged during a landing in mid-1958"

out of ~1200 produced, what an awful safety record
