Update/changed to WSJ article

Below was updated/changed in article:

United Continental CEO Jeff Smisek Departs - WSJ

United Continental said Mr. Smisek’s departure is related to federal and internal investigations associated with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

In a February filing, United Continental said some of its executives and employees had received federal grand-jury subpoenas related to people formerly associated with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and that it was cooperating with the government’s investigation. The airline said its internal probe didn’t raise any accounting or financial-reporting concerns.

The company also said its executive vice president of communications and government affairs and its senior vice president of corporate and government affairs have stepped down, moves related to the investigation.

Allegations of corruption involving government officials in New York and New Jersey. I'm shocked, shocked I tell you!

One of the claims is that United set up an EWR-CAE flight to curry favor with the chairman of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. It seems that he had a home in the Great State of South Carolina.

Back in the Pan Am days there was a JFK-BDA flight operated by a 727 that often ran empty. It was for the convenience of CEO Ed Acker who had a house in Bermuda.

The JFK - Bda flight departed Jfk in the evening and nightstopped leaving Bda at 0730 for an 0830 arrival so it was also for the convenience of me and many others based in Bda who could now do an out and back to Ny in a day. Only flight to US that didnt arrive and depsrt around mid day. Was always busy once established and retained by AA after take over. Acker was a homeowner and frequently in Bda and wd have been lobbied by others like him and the local business community of insurance and finance execs. So to be fair he probably made it an easy sell internally but it had high fares and probably did pretty well for the airline too.

Back in the Juan Trippe era Pan Am operated a daily flight to Rock Sound where he had a holiday home. Reports were that sometimes all it carried was a pressed copy of the New York Times for Mr Trippe.
