Volcano in Bali
Isn't Virgin and Jetstar breaking their own rules by flying soo close to an active volcano ? Especially at night when the ash is not visible?
Ash
I think you will find the Ausdie airlines cancelled when the ash was forecast to be within around 50nm of the airport.
Flights from Aus diverted enroute when the wind changed the ash cloud direction.
Meanwhile most other airlines continued. I would be interested to hear if any of the airlines that flew regularly in and around the extreme limits experience any adverse long term engine effects? Not that we will ever hear!
I say hats off to the airlines putting safety first.
Now looks like Surabaya in for the sane with the ash a blowen!

"Close" has no meaning unless their is a definition of the ash cloud.
The idea of management of risk is to know where you are relative to a known definition of the cloud.
It's a three dimensional consideration.

Other airlines stayed high, went past Bali and approached from the south.
Nice beat up SWH but I too spent time watching FlightRadar24 and it wasn't only MH that flew through the "forecast" ash area directly east of the volcano at altitudes below FL150 on descent, I watched numerous Asian carriers including SQ fly through the same area multiple times.
I couldn't believe they were doing it but.........but I'm not in the seat.
Nice try though.
