BBC use Jet Ranger noise when aerial filming but don't use Jet Ranger

Why is that!?

Watching the London Marathon and you would think it was a Jet Ranger they were using yet Arena's AS355 is the one doing the filming!

Just wondered....

Back in the day when studios were building their media libraries, the good ol' JetBanger ruled supreme.

As a consequence every helicopter sounds like a B206, both inside and out. Personally I don't mind.

Now if you knew what else they do to your daily news staple...

Thank goodness they don't use a Huey like everyone else.
The Jet Ranger is the stock helicopter sound effect in the Spot On music/effect player.
As cattletruck suggests, the Jet Ranger was King, I suppose they just haven't got around to loading that sound onto their system or maybe they think no one cares anyway.
I take your point though...........and well spotted.

Really? I find just about every helicopter on film and tv with a B47 soundtrack complete with spluttering piston engine. How difficult can it be to get this easy bit of continuity correct?

Kelly,
Not wanting to stand up for the BBC but from my experience over the years of working for them, with a live outside broadcast such as the London Marathon or Great North Run being so complex, I think that having the correct helicopter sound effect is probably low on their priorities, I think we should be grateful we have any helicopter sound effects at all.
I'll point it out to the powers that be and hopefully for The Great North Run coverage in September they will have the correct effect.
One other point to remember is that the sound mixer sitting in the OB truck is usually totally unaware of the type of aircraft being used on any given broadcast and therefore simply uses a generic helicopter sound effect.

Back in those far off days shots of Vickers Viscounts were often accompanied by jet noise!

I should also add I once worked for a big US gaming company who had access to Warner Bros Studios audio assets. The audio library was massive, you could easily get lost in there. I bet when you searched for a sound of a helicopter in that database the B206 rated the highest.

I would also like to add that the sounds in that database were professionally recorded and are without blemishes. It makes the producers life much easier as long as they pay the royalty fee for using it.

I love it when movies show a segment of one make of aeroplane or helicopter departing and a segment showing the arrival of a completely different make.

A classic is the Huey "simulator" at the AWM in Canberra where the sound track does not match the phase of flight, i.e. sound of engine start when lifting off.

Large jigsaw puzzles or a robust outdoor activity such as orienteering can help tremendously with this particular problem.

Sound effects are never used on a live outside broadcast such as the London marathon.
Even an edited highlight package will tend to use sound that was recorded on the day.

In addition to a live TV chopper, still photographers also take to the skies for important events.
