I believe Bond has a high pass rate and the facility is top notch. Paul Westaway was the guy who showed me round and was always helpful. Expensive, but worth it.

Is there another company starting IR's at Glos with AS355 sims? Can't remember the name but will find out.

I wouldnt recommend the company I did mine with after speaking to other guys. PM me for details if you want.

Nothing new there then

I know it's not a fair viewpoint on the newer course suppliers (who may well have some good instructors), but if you have the option stick with the established companies. (Or with experienced initial IR instructors).

Yes, TigerHelicopters use Gloucester ATC to do the test for the IR. They use their own A109 for this, so no worries about having to beg another operator for a machine.

I think that the A109 twin IR sim, run by Don MacDonald, is very popular and the pass rate is amazingly high.

And rumour has it that they've just bought 2 more A109s to cope with the demand.

There's a lot of info on their website.

JAA IFR Rating Helicopter

Hi everyone!

I already asked this question in Professional Pilot Training but maybe it better fitts in here.

At the moment I´m thinking of obtaining an JAA IFR Rating. In Germany, as far as I know, it is only possible on twin engine helicopters.

Does anyone know if Bristow Academy in florida offers JAA IFR training?

I´m also interested in information about Bristows in Norwich.

What do you intend to do with your SE IR(H) if you get one?

Bristow Acadamy does not provide JAA IFR training at this time (I think it has to do with the requirement that the flight training has to take place in JAA airspace).

Other than that I'm sure you tried finding the information through the search function of this website ?

Talking IR time again

Bristows Norwich can do your IR course but you will probably find the waiting list goes to next September or so.

It is a great course, well run and highly rated.

Prices are just about to up I believe.

By the way I am not connected with the Bristow IR school.

Following a SE IR(A) I plan to go for a IR(H).
Does it make sense to make only the SE IR (H) without a ME IR(H)?
That would take a minimum of 10 SE hours + exam, so the price would be acceptable.

Is there a FTO in a JAA countries other than UK and northern Europe (i.e. Italy, Germany, Spain, eastern Europe) that you know of, where the IR(H) can be done on R-22?

Thanks for the response so far.

@ Curtis E Carr: I just want to improve my attraciveness to future employers. I think SE IR is better than no IR.

I already thought of going the way to IR H over IR A, that sounds verry intresting.

What has to be done to convert from SE IR A to IR H on a twin engine helicopter?

A SE IR would be better than no IR, BUT not as attractive to a potential employer as a ME IR. (and atleast within the UK there are quite a few guys coming through and looking for work with shiny new ME IR's)

If you're seriously looking to self fund an IR, FWIW and IMHO 'bite the bullet' and do the ME IR course.

According to LASORS, ICAO IR(A) to JAR ME IR(H) requires 25 hours of training. I would guess that 15 of the 25 hours could be done in a FNPT2.

According to JAR, JAA SE IR(A) to JAA SE IR(H) - 10 hours of IFR training in a SE helicopter. JAA SE IR(H) to JAA ME IR(H) - 5 hours of IFR training in a ME helicopter.

You might want to check those numbers there. 8 hours for multi eng heli conversion first. Then getting up to standard. 5 hours? think not.

Hi helimutt

Of course one should be endorsed with a ME type rating prior to commencing a SE IR(H) to ME IR(H) extension...I thought that was not an issue here.
SPH MET (H) TR - 8 hours in helicoper excluding skill test (a part of it may be done in a FS/FTD though).

As for the SE IR(A)-SE IR(H)-ME IR(H) route, please find attached the following:

JAR–FCL 2.205 Flight instruction
(See Appendix 1 to JAR–FCL 2.205)

An applicant for an IR(H) shall have
participated in a course of integrated flying
training which includes training for the IR(H)
(see JAR–FCL 2.165) or shall have completed
an approved modular flying training course as
set out in Appendix 1 to JAR–FCL 2.205. If the
applicant is the holder of an IR(A) the total
amount of flight instruction required by Appendix
1 to JAR–FCL 2.205 may be reduced to 10
hours.

JAR-FCL 2.240(a)

(4) The holder of an IR(H) valid for a
single-engine helicopter type wishing to extend
for the first time the IR(H) to a multi-engine
helicopter type shall satisfactorily complete a
course comprising at least 5 hours dual
instrument instruction time of which three hours
may be in FS or FTD 2/3 or FNPT II/III, plus a
multi engine skill test in accordance with
Section 5 of Appendix 2 or 3 to JAR-FCL 2.240
on that type, at an approved FTO/TRTO.]

All the best
