Making Your Own HLS
I was always somewhat sceptical of Robert Mason's description of chopping down through trees in his Huey in his book, Chickenhawk. Not any more. I've just watched the documentary of these guys on the Smithsonian Channel. Extraordinary mission.

It was something done when necessity demanded, though you had to be selective in the size of timber attacked. Had a strike with fod while taxiing out of the revetments (unseen large sheet of plywood that blew up from rotor wash) which engineers said said twisted the mast on the Huey, certainly caused a large vertical bounce.
